A team from the Nepal Wushu Federation sets off for China
Kathmandu. As the opening ceremony of the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games, which has attracted worldwide attention, is approaching, athletes of the Nepal Sports Council(NSC) are preparing intensively.
On September 5, a group of 15 athletes and coaches from the Nepal Wushu Federation set off for Qingquan Wushu School in Huzhou, Zhejiang, China for intensive training and exchange studies for three weeks before the Asian Games. Huang Xiaobing, secretary-general of the Overseas Chinese Association of Nepal, and three other people saw off the Nepali Martial Arts(Wushu) athletes at Tribhuvan Airport.
Previously, due to the lack of financial support from the state, Nepalese martial arts athletes encountered many difficulties in going to China for pre-competition adaptive training. The Nepal Wushu Federation turned to the Chinese Embassy in Nepal and the Overseas Chinese Association of Nepal for help. After multi-party communication and coordination, they have received strong support and response from relevant Chinese sides. Zhejiang Yongda Group and Zhejiang Huzhou Qingquan Martial Arts School accepted and jointly undertook the three-week pre-match training and exchange study venue for 15 Nepalese martial arts athletes, as well as all food, accommodation, transportation, and other expenses, providing a better life for the Nepalese martial arts athletes. Zhang Faqing, Chairman of Zhejiang Yongda Group, and Principal Zhou of Huzhou Qingquan Martial Arts School were very open-minded when talking about funding Nepalese martial arts athletes. During the communication and coordination process, they both expressed their willingness to accept and help solve the difficulties faced by Nepalese martial arts athletes and were willing to Single-handedly shoulder the responsibility for international friendly cooperative relations, promote the lasting friendship between China and Nepal, and take practical actions to help promote the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games.
Qingquan Martial Arts School in Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province was founded in 1994. It is located in the Lanxiang Mountain Scenic Area on the southwest bank of Taihu Lake, one of the five largest freshwater lakes in China. It covers an area of more than 1,000 acres and a construction area of more than 90,000 square meters. It consists of Qingquan Primary School, Qingquan Junior High School, Qingquan Vocational High School, Qingquan Natural Science Discovery Park, more than 3000 students are in it. It is China’s first martial arts culture research base and national 3A-level scenic spot. The entire campus is built like a palace, with mountains behind it. The lake is well-proportioned and magnificent, and is known as “the most scenic martial arts school in the world”.
In the past 30 years of running the school, the school has always adhered to the policy of running a school with moral education as the first priority. With the school motto of ” Becoming an upright person capable of writing and martial arts “, it has continuously explored and innovated educational methods and won the China Private Education Outstanding Contribution Award. It has formed a unique “1234” Qingquan education model, reported by more than 40 media across the country, and has been researched or promoted. Chinese martial arts was introduced to Nepal by Pranier Dorje Karki in 1987, with a history of 36 years. During this period, Wushu has successfully won its own status among various sports in Nepal and has gradually developed in Nepal. Behind this achievement are the founder of Nepal Wushu, former head coach Mr. Karki, national-level coaches, school-level athletes, volunteer coaches, and every martial arts athlete. They are inseparable from their enthusiasm and hard work for Chinese martial arts. They have made active efforts and important contributions in all major events.
The first Nepal National Wushu Competition was held in Pokhara in 1992. In 2009, Wushu was officially included in the Fifth National Games of Nepal.
The first time the Nepali Wushu Team participated in an international competition was the First Asian Wushu Championship held in Yokohama, Japan in 1987, followed by the First South Asian Wushu Championship in Nepal in 2000. Wushu has been included in the South Asian Games since the 10th South Asian Games held in Sri Lanka in 2006.
At present, more than 60 regions in Nepal regularly carry out martial arts training and exchanges. Among the previous Asian Games contestants, Nanquan player Nima Gharti Magar won the gold medal in the Nanquan all-around competition at the 12th South Asian Games (South Asian Games) held in India in 2016. India and Pakistan won silver and bronze respectively in the same event.
Nepalese athletes won 1 gold, 10 silver, and 1 bronze in the 2016 South Asian Games, a total of 12 medals.
Similarly, Nima once again won the gold medal for Nepal at the 13th South Asian Games held in Nepal in 2019, winning 5 gold, 6 silver and 5 bronze medals for a total of 16 medals.
Nanquan female contestant Bina is the most experienced player in the Nepalese martial arts circle. She performed very well in the Nanquan all-round competition of the routine event.
Sanda player Raj Kumar Rasaili defeated Pakistan’s Zakir Hussain for gold. In the Sanda 52kg final, Rasali fell behind 1-3 in the first round but returned to the game after defeating his Pakistani opponent by 4 points. Bhuvan Shrestha (Women’s Changquan), Macha Ratna Maharjan (Men’s Tai Chi) and Dhanbir Maharjan (Men’s Sanda 70kg) won the silver medal.
Nepal participated in the martial arts event for the first time in the 1994 Asian Games in Hiroshima, Japan, and a total of 6 athletes participated. In the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, South Korea, a total of 4 athletes participated. A total of 8 athletes participated in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha, Qatar, 13 athletes participated in the 2010 Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, 13 athletes participated in the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea, and 10 athletes participated in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta, Indonesia. A total of 12 martial arts athletes will participate in the 19th Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China, of which 7 athletes will participate in routine competitions and 5 athletes will participate in Sanda competitions.
Prior to this, a total of 12 martial arts athletes were preparing for the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games in the semi-enclosed hall of the National Sports Committee (NSC) in Tripureshwor, Kathmandu.
The Nepalese martial arts team has participated in several major Asian Games events. In July this year, the athletes who went to China to participate in the Chengdu Universiade also received strong support from overseas Chinese in Nepal. The intensive training and learning in the three weeks before the game will effectively improve the team members’ adaptation to the environment of the competition field. At the same time, it will also reflect the athletes’ sense of identification and participation in the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games. The athletes are confident and full of energy. It is imperative to prepare for the 19th Hangzhou Asian Games and strive to achieve good results in this Asian Games.
